A day in the mountains

Headed up to the mountains with Jen yesterday. She apparently hadn't been up there yet even though she has been in Denver for over a year.

Our mission was to find mammals. Specifically we were "hunting" bison (buffalo), elk, and mountain sheep (rams). First stop, the Buffalo viewing area, and there were plenty of bison there as hay had been put out to feed them. They're captive though so that wasn't the most impressive thing. She was pretty happy about it though. Then on to Evergreen to the elk reserve area, none there. Then to Echo Lake, full of snow shoe-ers. Then to Georgetown. We didn't see any sheep at the sheep viewing area, but we did see the Georgetown Ice Races.

After that we had some burgers in town and headed home. Inidentally I was upset to find that the Red Ram restaurant is now closed, but the Raven Hill Mining Company Restaurant (next door) was pretty tasty and made a mean very rare cheeseburger. Unfortunately the ambiance seems much more fake.

Went hiking yesterday at the top of Mt Evans. Hiking might be a stretch because I drove up the mountain, but there is that last 100 feet of elevation or so, which I promptly jumped off of. Got some silly pictures. My brother Donald came with me, which is good, because he rarely gets out of the house.

I haven't made up my mind about the use of photoshop and other techniques to alter photos. Usually I just like the original photography. But, I've been messing around with HDR a bit and now I've gone and let one of my photos be processed with a texture layer. Oh my goodness. Am I officially a flickr whore? Probably.

I've been messing around with HDR photography. I don't like things to be too surreal, but some of it is cool.

Erik and I went exploring in the plains of Northern Colorado and came across a retired man name Leo that had 45 tractors in his yard. This is one of them.

We also explored the nearby town of Dearfield, which used to be an African American "colony". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dearfield,_Colorado

Incidentally we made an interesting discovery that a number of county roads are now private roads and you can be charged with trespassing for driving on them. This is disturbing to me. In this area the roads are apparently owned my Anschutz.

Here we see some secret service snipers and spotters. These guys were visibile to everyone. At one point though a hidden sniper came out of a roof top to my right and pointed his rifle in my general direction. As soon as I saw him he walked back away on the rooftop. Maybe I look scary with my zoom lens. This is the Obama rally in Denver on 10/226/2008. I believe there were over 100,000 people there.

I went back to the skaguay hydroelectric plant, the abandoned power plant that is only reachable by 5 miles of the worst hiking I can imagine. This time I attempted to take the easiest and wettest route I could find, and it was much better and less deadly. I also went with another explorer, jmt3x. We got farther than I had before, going beyond the power plant up the hill through the tunnel, across a bridge that won't be there for long, and to the site that used to have a large trestle. I'm still sore from the trip, but hopefully I have some good photos to show for it. Pictured here is a 3D anaglyph of one of the pelton wheels.

I've been reading through Ramble Colorado by Eric Peterson and I came across a cheeseburger monument. Apparently one of the places credited with the first cheeseburger, and the place that got the trademark was the Humpty Dumpty Barrel Drive-In. It was also Colorado's frist drive-in. Louis E. Ballast trademarked "cheeseburger" on March 5, 1935. That's apparently the last that was heard about it. The site of the bbq and burger restaurant is now a key bank. You too can find the stone at 2776 N Speer Blvd in Denver.

It was a great event this year, lots of people (not sure how many but hundreds, lots of dancing and fire, and what more could you ask for?

The Bohners also burned their whole shack front after the giant squid effigy was torched. Good times.

At Apogaea this year, Colorado's regional burning man event, there was a camp called Metal Camp. Metal Camp appeared to mostly be sponsored by the Iron Anvil, a Denver steel fabrication and art shop. Well, they had an "art car" of sorts. No, it didn't drive. But what it did do was provide lots of entertainment.

They set up the car on a tarp and laid several tools of destruction around the perimeter. At first only one person was allowed to hack at the car at a time, but eventually pandemoniam took over. The tools included sledgehammers, a double headed axe, an about 60 pound gear on a swining pole, and a 100 pound splitting device.

On Friday the pounding began, and people took turns destroying the vehicle. At first I was napping in my tent and I heard windows shattering. I eventually made it over and learned the ways of the double headed axe. After trying to knock some car parts off I decided to make a nice cut through the bumper, then I went on the roof and did what I could to split the entire thing in half. It was then finished off with the 100 pound splitter. I also had some fun with the big gear tool.

The destruction actually continued into Saturday, when at some point some over ambitious people flipped the car, spilling gasoline into the pristine earth. This ended everyones fun.

Actuall later some people hacked at other parts and even a neighboring car. Joy!

If you head by the Iron Anvil on a first friday you may be able to break something smaller with these tools. Have fun.

Last night at confluence park there were more people in attendance than ever before. Dragon even made a speech about it. Unfortunately they didn't want to leave when the park closed at 11 and that could become a problem. Mostly the problem is with some new drummers who don't seem to care if neighbors complain, and in fact invited the police to come and stop them. So we may not have fire spinning at the park for long.

I rode up Mount Evans on my motorcycle and saw a mountain goat. Picture that, or wait, you don't have to because I also had my camera. I actually saw it twice, or I saw two goats. Once at the summit next to the bathrooms, then again at summit lake next to the, uhm, bathrooms. I think he liked the salt on the walkways. At one point he was charging down the path at me but then saw me and decided to pose for this shot.

I got some great shots of (a fire spinner who wishes to remain nameless):edited at a little party called Zoolander: The Return of Mugato on Saturday. The party marks the return of the gog at the new gog which is called The Bomb Factory. It's also known as the former residence of ManiaTV.

This shot is another attempt at combining flash with the slow shutter photo to capture fire spinning. I think I'm getting better at it.

Also I had a significant number of girls that wanted to show me their boobs for photos. I'm not sure what it says about my ethics or taste but I can't complain.

It's getting warm and the fire spinners are back at Confluence Park in Denver again. Last week the cops showed up and stopped it, right when it was stopping anyway. Spinners have been practicing their art at the park for 7 years now, and have been featured on CNN national news, and the local Westword magazine. The spin poi, hula hoops, staff, darts, swords, and juggle. Luckily no cops showed up last night, maybe because it was Cinqo De Mayo and they were busy in other parts of town.

Last night I also tried some new techniques with a flash towards the end of the night, and had one ok photo as a result. (not this photo, this one is just ambient light)

I was visiting family in the area and so I went over to Ordway this morning. They had a large fire last Tuesday that killed two firefighters and destroyed 24 homes. This is an autostitched panorama of a field that used to contain some of those homes. I also have some photos taken from where the wooden bridge was that collapsed, a railroad bridge just north of there that would collapse if anything went on it, and some industrial stuff. My uncle is a firefighter in nearby Fowler and he was there driving a truck too. Incidentally he was told that the bridge was on fire so he avoided it, but apparently the two firefighters that died didn't know about its condition and they attempted to drive over it. It sounds like there must have been much mayhem and miscommunication at the time.

The 150th year of Denver's architecture was celebrated this weekend with Doors Open Denver. I didn't get to very many places this weekend, but this gem of a photo was taken in one of the towers of St. John's Episcopal Cathedral. I refer to it as my flickr whore shot. I think I framed it a little too low, but I predict that it will still get more views than the other photos I shot at doors open denver. We'll see if I'm beginning to understand flickr.

I went looking for waterfalls around Central City this weekend. I tried to get to one called Missouri Falls in Missouri Canyon but it was on private property. It also didn't seem to have much water coming from where it was supposed to be, but I bet it had some kind of ice trickle going on. Maybe some other time I'll check it out somehow.

Across the street though I found this mine, which my map said was called sixteen to one. It is locked up with a permanent iron gate, but I managed to get this cool photo of the inside, showing the iron rails still intact. It doesn't look like it ran for long from the size of the tailings, but it's one of the better ones I've seen up close. I believe it is a tungsten mine.

I also looked around nevadaville and some of the cemeteries. Tomtom showed me some picture places west of Central City, one of which was called "Queen's Chair" but all the roads it showed to the location were private trails. Apparently if you're a Gilpin County resident you can get a permit to hike there, but I'm not.

The cacophony society hosted Denver's pillow fight for world pillow fight day. They usually host zombie jesus and easter bunny day but got a little surprised by the early easter this year, so combined the pillow fight with easter bunnies. Without the zombie jesii it must have appeared a more civil and faith based event, because it got on the cover of the Denver Post (at least the online edition) on an article about being faithful and celebrating easter early in the year. http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_8664897

New Years morning I eventually made it to the Bubbledubdub party on 3330 Larimer St. in Denver. I was so tired from moving all weekend and sick with some nasty sinus cold thing, that I didn't do much partying. I did see Valerie and Ryan as well as Leaf and other burners. Some burner guy was giving out beers with red bull in them, which is a horrible waste of shitty beer. Red bull y vodka however = happy times, although Valerie said it was bad for you. Tell that to Ibiza!

So the party was named with the bubbles because of some inflatables from liquidluxworks. While a cool idea, and maybe a cool thing to touch if you were on massive trippy hipno drugs, I wasn't and couldn't even find the inspiration to take a photo of them. The other room was the steampunk / industrial area. There the decorations consisted of the paper with a victorian sort of logo with a gear in it, some plastic candle holders, and a plast tubing made to look like brass tubing that had no function sculpture. The one cool art piece was a rose lamp thing, but it wasn't photogenic. I think the decorations would have been better if instead of decorating they just held it in a basement with an old boiler.

In both rooms though there were projectors and cool suspended screens, and I do like projectors and light beams.

After caving I put back on my caver outfit, some facepaint, and went to "the gog" for a burner rave. It was pretty much the rave I've always wanted to go to, but ended up being sort of invisible. I think people thought my costume was making fun of the some recent mining tragedies, which is perhaps more clever than my intention of the ryhme of zombie caver with zombie raver.

I was surprised to recognize only a few people at the party, and they apparently didn't recognize or want to talk with me. I was feeling a little anti-social anyway. Cool location though, lots of power outages, weird murder and orgy rooms, and some good dancing.

Took a trip to Fulford Cave. It's cold enough now that there is snow leading up the hill to the entrance, but that doesn't really change the internal temperature. Inside I'd guess it's about 40 degrees, and very very damp and wet. There's lots of places to slide around and fall off stuff, and weird looking walls and formations to shine your flashlights at. I think we didn't even make it through half of the cave, so I'll return at some point.

Every Sunday night at Confluence Park in Denver (behind the REI on the Platte River) fire spinners practice their stuff, and a drum circle beats out a rhythm. You can see people breath fire and spin poi, staffs, darts, and their own creations.

This is pretty much where my day at burning man started, at the moonshine lounge. From here I walked across the playa, viewing art and continuing to drink moonshine. I stopped by the black rock glacier - moved some steel for Ehron, was apparently the last person so see the sculpture before it was removed for unknown reasons, then was picked up by the double decker articulated bus - where I danced my way back to town. Lots of dancing, some washing at the carcass wash, then I passed out - way to dehydrated. Should have gone and gotten an IV - ended up being a bad night with a headache and other bad signs. Fun day though.

Some of my friends have been trying to get to an old abandoned hydroelectric powerplant in out in the wilderness for years. This place was built in 1901 and was used until 1960something when flooding knocked if offline permanently. They have conducted about 14 trips looking for it, unsuccessfully. On recent trips they followed the penstock, the old wood and metal hoop water pipe, but could only get so far as sections of it were washed away and bridges were missing or unstable. This was my third trip, and second one when I had some idea where it was supposed to be. Last time I took a route on the canyon floor along the creek. There is a sort of "trail" here so it should be easy, but in many places the trail disappears and you're stuck between a fast flowing creek and a 600 foot high wall of rock. I've opted to climb over the rocks most times, and it was grueling. Last time I ended up getting stranded with thunderstorms, soaked, in the dark, and it took me six hours to get back to my motorcycle, where on the way home I ended up with hypothermia. This time similar things happened, but I was smarter and camped and took my new AWD vehicle which can handle the dirt roads that get near the location nicely. As it turned out it was right off the creek about 75 feet up and only 5 miles down the creek. Considering I still couldn't figure out how to hike along the creek without making severe climbing detours, it was by far the most grueling hike I've ever taken. Hazards included; slippery wet rocks and trees, a boulder that came loose and pushed me down a hill, temporarily pinning me against a tree, water way above my boots, trees across the creek, and apparently a christian fundamentalist camp somewhere. I made it though, battered, bruised, and tattered. Hooray! I don't think I'll be doing more hiking soon.

edit 7/7/08 The Colorado Springs Gazette wrote an article about a trip to Skaguay. It has a great slideshow and video documenting the trip, a previously unpublished memoir of life at the plant, and is overall a great article. I've been feeling like I haven't accomplished much, so let's see what I did this weekend:

watched Pan's Labyrinth - good underworld not really scare mystical movie with a fawn, fairies, and fascists

paid back garth for helping me move by taking him to restaurant in evergreen
bought new gps - garmin etrex vista cx to replace etrex legend - has micro sd slot

Don't Pick up rocks in Boulder

So last month I'm with my buddies in an open space park in Boulder. They have long abandoned coal mines, some of which have been on fire for 50-100+ years underground. We find the old entrance of one of the Lewis mines, which is now just a sort of ditch thing, and walk down in there. There aren't any signs, nothing. In the ditch is a visible vein of coal, just a few inches high. We proceed to look at little pieces of it, removing them from the vein. Then there are some fossilized shells and stuff, not particularly recognizable or of any quality, but they look neat so we pick them up and examine them. After a while of doing this, we start to leave. No sooner are we at the top of the ridge than a ranger stands up, who apparently was hiding there for a while.

A month later now, we're picking up the sides of the roads near open space parks for trash, with 40 hours of community service to complete and $160 in court fees. Luckily we got a deferred something so the misdemeanor charge will go off the records in a year, as long as none of us get caught doing something similar. Whatever that would be.

It should also be noted that, well at least I've heard, it's legal in most of Colorado to pick up little fossils and stuff in parks like this. They aren't of any real value, and, well it's a coal mine!

I'm not sure what lesson I've learned from this experience other than to avoid Boulder.

The first stop on the New York pizza tour is Sac's Place in Astoria, Queens. The pizza is cooked with the heat of coal, bringing it up to 900 degrees. The crust was great, but the sauce seemed too raw and tomatoe tasting, kind of the only way I know how to make it actually. Not the best IMHO.

It's snowing again. I went for a walk at 10 pm and took some photos in the ambient light. I'm impressed with what my pentax DL can do with the light, although the colors came out weird.

Too bad I got my car stuck in the front parking lot of my building. Nobody has used it since it snowed the first time, but it should be less shoveling in the morning since its right on the street.

So my car is dug out of the snow pile it was in, as seen here. I still haven't driven it anywhere though. I tried to get down the pictured alleyway, but got stuck in an icy rut only about 10 feet from its parked spot. So, after getting it back where it came form, it has rested.

Maybe later today I shall get moving and go and explore. At the moment though, I'm making incredible progress with apartment cleaning. I've even managed to work on some old projects, like sanding my kitchen table. Hoorah.

I'm staying in the Tropicana on the Las Vegas Strip. The pool here has waterfalls, swim up blackjack, and adult lagoon, and hot tub jacuzzies nestled in various nooks. The thing is, nobody asks for your room or anything, so I think anyone could just sneek in. Hang out in the forest of planted palm trees and then jump in the jacuzzi.

I've done these offers before, where you sign up for some service or website with a credit card, then you get some free thing like an mp3 player. I usually have no need for the service, so I call up at the end of the month and cancel it, and that's about all there is to it.

Well here is a deal for a free 30gb video ipod. They have lots of offers, many of which are only a dollar and sometimes they even give you that dollar back if you don't want the service. I'm not sure what the list is all about, or the circle, nor do I understand the point of the articles, but I seem to have some idea about their writing style. And thus, I'm now a part of its history.

If you're this fat, you probably shouldn't sit near a no parking sign. You might get a ticket. And in Denver, parking tickets are no joke. The cops will bag a meter with your car parked in front of it then tow your car. There aren't any signs letting you know abou this or anything, but every friday just watch market st between 19th and 20th and see it done.

This guy however, might move if you bagged his meter.

Urinals of Denargo Market

I found a weird website, urinal.net, which also has a link to google maps where you can see all the posted urinals in north america. urinal map

These urinals are at Denargo Market, and they seem unusual enough for me to contribute them to the site. They are old and made by Standard Madstone so they may not be so unusual, but I can't think of any of this type I've ever peed in before. They also flush very much like a toilet.
